Majorca airports show decrease in passengers

December 15th, 2008

THE number of passengers travelling through airports in the Balearic Islands has dropped by two percent.
Over 29 million travellers passed through the region’s three airports from January to November. This was a slight drop from 29.7 million the previous year.

Palma’s Son Sant Joan Airport handled 22 million passengers, but this was down by 1.3 percent on the previous year.
However, it was still the busiest airport in Spain, with more passengers than either Madrid’s Barajas or Barcelona’s El Prat airports. International journeys accounted for 16.1 million of the total number with 5.8 million travelling on domestic routes.

The airport in Ibiza handled 4.5 million passengers, a drop of 2.3 percent on the previous year. Almost 2.5 million of these were passengers travelling overseas.

In Minorca, more than 2.5 million travellers passed through the airport during the same period, with 1.3 million on international journeys. This was a decrease of six percent on the previous year

Majorca Weather

December 12th, 2008

TEMPERATURES plummeted noticeably in the Islands yesterday producing one of the coldest days so far this Autumn.

In Portopi in Palma, thermometers were registering no more than 7 degrees in the middle of the afternoon whilst the average temperature for this time of the year is 16.5 degrees. Head of the Balearic Met Office, Agustin Jansa said that the highest temperature recordings for the day had been during the early hours of the morning which is another unusual factor. The maximum reached in Portopi was 12 degrees at midnight.

Rainfall was also particularly heavy yesterday, particularly over the latter part of Tuesday into Wednesday morning. To quote an example, between midnight and 8am yesterday, 47 litres of water per square metre fell in Sant Telm and 42 in Lluc. Portopi escaped more lightly with 25 litres per square metre for the whole day. The ongoing rain has meant that the underground springs of Ses Fonts Ufanes have broken the surface in spectacular cascades for the sixth time so far this year.

Majorca Southwest Areas to Buy properties in Mallorca

Most visitors tend to stay around only part of the Majorca coastline, many without realizing about the magnificent inland scenery of plains and mountains that can also be enjoyed.

Palma, the island’s capital, has a population of approximately 300,000, which is practically half of the entire population of the island. It stretches some 15 km along the coastline, from El Arenal and Palma beach in the east as far as the cosmopolitan districts of Cala Mayor and San Agustivities of all kinds are more than well-catered- for here. There are restaurants, cafeteries, pubs, concert halls, discotheques, a bull-ring and all types of shows, offering the visitor entertainment and amusement at all times.

Tourism had already become an important aspect of life on the island of Majorca back in the early 1920’s although on a much smaller scale than today, of course. It was a select, mainly winter tourism which grew up steadily until the begins of the Spanish Civil War. The later “discovery” of Ibiza and Menorca did not occur until well after the Civil War. At that time Majorca was full of artists, who established what was, to all intents and purposes, a colony in and around Pollensa and its port.
One of the most famous of them all was Anglada Camarassa. That conglomeration of artists and poets at Pollensa was to bring about something previously unheard of in island tourism - the construction in 1929 of the Hotel Formentor. It was promoted by the Argentinian entrepreneur Adan Dihel, who even suffered personal hardship in his determination to build the finest hotel on the Mediterranean, near a beach which was not really considered the most adequate place for rest and relaxation. The Hotel Formentor brought about a previously unimaginable change in the island’s tourist industry, and was soon imitated by the Hotel Cala Dor and the Gran Hotel Camp de mar. These new hotels successfully joined forces with the already-existing Hotel Victoria Gran Hotel de Palma and the Hotel Prp.

Puerto de Soller (1,000 inhabitants) Its semi-circular beach is approximately one kilometre in length.

Majorca Still for Millionare

November 17th, 2008

PALMA
MAJORCA is one of the most attractive places for a millionaire to spend money even though inflation has seen the purchasing power of one million pounds shrink dramatically since the first tourists jetted to the region.

According to figures released by the Bank of Scotland yesterday, someone would need 17.5 million pounds today to enjoy the equivalent lifestyle of someone with one million pounds 50 years ago because of a 17.5 fold increase in retail prices.

In 1958, one million pounds could purchase a luxury Portals-based yacht, sumptuous Son Vida villa and sleek sports car - and still leave change for a slap-up meal in a top Palma restaurant.

Mallorca property market still on the up

October 31st, 2008

Yes, the mid-range market on Mallorca is being squeezed by the global credit crisis - but high-end properties with high - end prices are still in demand.
In April this year, there was actually a slight increase in British buyers. It seems that they’ve ‘accepted’ the sterling-euro exchange situation for the moment and are not waiting to see - as they were back in January - if the pound will recover.”

The good news for Mallorca, however, is that it hasn’t had the uncontrolled over-building we’ve seen in recent years in areas of the mainland. Planning regulations are being implemented more strictly than ever before. And so the high-end market, as we’ve heard, still has demand exceeding supply, particularly when it comes to beach-front and frontline golf properties.
But when it comes to handing over hard cash, it’s in an economic downturn that the truth of the old property adage hits home: better to buy the worst house on a desirable road, than the best house on a less-desirable road. In other words, designer brands may be more expensive - but in the end, they’re better value!

It is easy to see why Mallorca is a favourite with overseas homebuyers.
The property market on the largest Balearic island is still booming with super rich buyers from France, Ireland, Russia, Sweden and Eastern European countries dominating the top end of the market. Most property professionals agree that business has been healthy, with steady requests for the two bed, two bath apartment, preferably with sea view. The top end of the market has been flying high with the best high end properties being snapped up before even making photograph stage, let alone to agency websites.
Agents report that business in 2007 was even better than in 2006 despite the US and European credit crunches and worries over Spain’s property market. Despite the anxiety surrounding other parts of Spain at the moment Mallorca is still a very safe investment. Property prices are pretty much guaranteed to remain steady due to the fact there is limited land available, a newly elected regional government in the Balearics has suggested it will limit building, so any existing properties on the island will be in high demand, but this simply makes Mallorca more exclusive, pushing up prices as supply falls further behind demand.
Spain’s pain has been Mallorca’s gain these past few years. Not only because wealthy international property-hunters who might previously have bought in ’the Costas’ have been diverting en masse to the jewel of the Balearics, but because the Mallorcan authorities have managed to steer the island away from the crass over-development that has scarred so much of southern Spain.

Tourism is Mallorca’s life-blood, but with 95% of holidaymakers concentrated in only 5% of its territory, up market tourists of the residential kind have plenty of room to spread their wings in less-developed areas of this elegant island. Meanwhile, massive current and future investment in Mallorca’s road, marina and golf infrastructure can only enhance the island’s status as one of Europe’s safest and most rewarding overseas-property destinations, where, in the past decade, average house prices have grown twice as fast as those on the mainland.
Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas are well-known holiday-home owners on Mallorca, near neighbours include Andrew Lloyd Webber, PR guru Lynne Franks, Boris Becker, Claudia Schiffer, Michael Schumacher, The Norwegian and Spanish royal families to name but a few.

With super-rich buyers from France, Ireland, Russia and Sweden now homing in on a market traditionally dominated by Britons and Germans, Mallorca’s leading international agents are in expansive mood. Convinced that the momentum at the top end of the market is now ’unstoppable.’

Demand for designer properties defies downturn in Mallorca

The Mallorcan property market has been booming in recent years and is one of the healthiest in Europe. With strict building regulations in force to prevent over development, it is expected that prices will continue to rise and when taken into account with the buoyant holiday rental market on the island, Mallorcan property can be considered to be an excellent investment.

Buyers keen to escape the grey UK for a new life in sunny Mallorca are being urged to move quickly, following news that prices on the Balearic Islands have soared by a staggering 15.26% in the last 12 months, according to Spain´s largest newspaper, El Mundo.
Demand from all over Europe for properties on Mallorca has resulted in a limit to the new land available, pushing prices up.
